The reason I cite problems that date back to old editions is not to dismiss the legitimacy of being annoyed with a certain problem, but to demonstrate that the problem isn't some new invention that the evil corporate harpies at Hasbro/WotC created brand new specifically to ruin your fun. Unfortunately, my inability to debate something without going off on tangents sometimes means that I make a point and then don't clarify why I made the point.

On the matter of argument reversal... I'm not the only one guilty of this. I remember when your complaint to rolling up a new 1st level character was that 1st level characters were too weak and low level play was boring because you couldn't do anything. Now your complaint is that low level characters are *too* awesome and should be weak and unable to so much as tie their shoe without a life-or-death struggle from which they barely emerge.

And lastly, yes....you and I were both on the same page, cynical and critical of 4th edition. The thing that "suddenly" changed my opinion is that I started playing it every Sunday with two of our friends. My sudden liking of the game did not occur spontaneously or for the sole purpose of antagonizing you.

That being said, I do hope that you enjoy the game, and I'm glad that you decided to give it a go despite your considerable misgivings.

I'm also glad that the only thing we regularly fight about is D&D, rather than things married couples usually fight about.

Good essay, darling.
